In the harshness of freezing temperatures, it is imperative that you take the necessary steps in the process of closing your pool for the winter. Although these steps are written for in ground pools, many of the same precautions should be applied to above ground pools as well.
First and foremost, make sure you read the specific instructions from your specific pool company that was outlined when during your swimming pool installation.
Tips to Close your Pool
- To begin, thoroughly clean you pool from any debris or dirt ensuring that the water is clean.
- Clean your filter by back washing.
- With the specific attachments that were supplied by pool company, lower the water level below the return lines. Once done, shut the pump off and disconnect all relevant hoses.
- It is important to plus the main drain by placing a foam rod at the skimmer. When doing so, use plumbers tape to ensure a water tight seal. Make sure you blow out all of the line to prevent freezing and then plug. Make sure you place Styrofoam in the skimmer to absorb the expansion of ice.
- It is important to drain all the water out of the pump and filter.
- Next, remove all plugs from the pump and the filter, the pressure gauge and the glass water observer attached to the filter.
- Place chlorine and algaecide to prevent algae buildup.
- Remove ladders, diving board and any other enhancements and cover pool to prevent any debris from entering.
- Shut the power off to pump.
