In the harshness of freezing temperatures, it is imperative that you take the necessary steps in the process of closing your pool for the winter. Although these steps are written for in ground pools, many of the same precautions should be applied to above ground pools as well.

First and foremost, make sure you read the specific instructions from your specific pool company that was outlined when during your swimming pool installation.

1. To begin, thoroughly clean you pool from any debris or dirt ensuring that the water is clean.
2. Clean your filter by back washing.
3. With the specific attachments that were supplied by pool company, lower the water level below the return lines. Once done, shut the pump off and disconnect all relevant hoses.
4. It is important to plus the main drain by placing a foam rod at the skimmer. When doing so, use plumbers tape to ensure a water tight seal. Make sure you blow out all of the line to prevent freezing and then plug. Make sure you place Styrofoam in the skimmer to absorb the expansion of ice.
5. It is important to drain all the water out of the pump and filter.
6. Next, remove all plugs from the pump and the filter, the pressure gauge and the glass water observer attached to the filter.
7. Place chlorine and algaecide to prevent algae buildup.
8. Remove ladders, diving board and any other enhancements and cover pool to prevent any debris from entering.
9. Shut the power off to pump.

Opening Your Swimming Pool

Here at Deep Blue Pools and Spas, we get a lot of questions about how to open your swimming pool for the summer. In case you’ve been living under a rock, summer is here! We thought we’d share some of our top tips on opening your swimming pool since you got your Utah swimming pool installation complete.

Steps to open your swimming pool

1. Start by siphoning off all water that might be collected atop your pool’s cover. if you will be using an electric siphon pump, it is a good idea to place a plastic frisbee or similar item between the pump and the cover.

2. Carefully remove any twigs and other debris from the top of the cover.

3. Disconnect and take off the cover cable from the ratchet.

4. Take off any cover clips and water tubes.

5. Remove the cover slowly. Be careful not to let any debris that is atop the cover slip into the pool as you pull the cover off.

6. Remove the pillow by untying its string. Deflate the pillow.

7. Take out any leaves and sticks or other debris from the pool with a skimmer or a leaf net.

8. Expect the water level to be low. This occurs due to ice, evaporation, and water displacement.

9. The water level may be low. Add more. It is important that the level of the water be at half-skimmer. This will be the water level to maintain throughout the pool season.

10. Check your skimmer, pump, and filter to make sure that they are in correct working condition.

Pool skimmers can vary quite a bit in their appearance from the most typical one which is attached the wall of your pool similar to the picture to free floating pool skimmers that float in your pool.  Regardless of which pool skimmer you have on your swimming pool, the general concept of how they work very similar.  Water passes through the skimmer and as it filters it, it keeps it contained when the pump turns off.  As your pump is on, the top layer of your swimming pool is filtered into your pool skimmer basket, which is typically accessed through the top lid on your swimming pool patio in which its recommended to pull out and clean regularly.

Pool Skimmer Issues

Even though pool skimmer cleaning and maintenance is one of the easiest things to do to your swimming pool, it’s also important to keep an eye out on specific things with your pool skimmer to avoid a headache down the road.  We often hear horror stories from our customers that could have been prevented if they knew what to look for in the pool skimmer.  If you find that your pool skimmer lid is no longer fitting easily when you put it back on, this is usually an indication that the pool deck or concrete has put too much pressure on the lid and casing for the pool skimmer lid.  There are few things that can sometimes fix this such using some kind of grinder or saw to shave off the part of the poll skimmer lid that is overlapping or if it’s minor enough, just scraping it on the concrete enough to shave off the overlap in the pool skimmer lid.

Pool skimmers are also known to occasionally crack over time when the dirt or concrete settles around it.  Freezing water within the skimmer can also cause cracking as well if it’s not properly winterized.  Pool skimmer cracking can be easily fixed by using pool putty or silicone unless it’s a vinyl lined swimming pool, in which you will likely have to purchase a new gasket and faceplate.  If you have to go the route of using pool putty to repair cracks, it’s important to lower your water enough to be below the bottom of the skimmer.  Similar to a bicycle tire puncture, it can sometimes be hard to determine where the leak is coming from.  If this is the case, use food coloring or some kind of dye method to find the leaking or cracked spots.  If you ever have to replace the basket, it’s as simple as just dropping it in.

Pool Skimmer Regular Maintenance

Skimmers are very easy to take care if they are taken care of consistently with regular swimming pool maintenance.  If you find that it is too cracked to repair, you may need to remove the surrounding concrete or decking and completely re-install the skimmer with expansion joints fully surrounding the new swimming pool skimmer.

• How to Treat Green Water

Owning a swimming pool is much more than just taking a dip on a hot day.  A swimming pool is exposed to a lot of people, germs and bacteria and without proper swimming pool maintenance, it could result in sickness and green water amongst other things.  I’m sure we’ve all seen swimming pools that has green water caused by algae in swimming pools before.  You might have even questioned if Shrek himself lived in the swamp.

What do you do if you have green water in your swimming pool?

There are some simple steps that you can do if your swimming pool has begun getting a green tint to the water.  Regardless of if you have a swimming pool company or not treat it for you, it’s important to get your swimming pool water circulating.  If you don’t get it circulating, any chemicals that you attempted to treat it with will just fall to the bottom of the pool and miss most of the water that’s affected.   It’s a good rule of thumb to immediately turn on your swimming pool filter(s) upon discovering your newly green pool water and keep it on continuously until the green goes away after your shock and chemical treatment, of course.

Adding to the above paragraph, while you are circulating your water after treatment, you will likely have to continue keeping an eye on and cleaning your filters as it will be catching most of the grime.  You should see the build up less and less for each cleaning as it filters out the green out of your water.

How long does green water take to dissolve?

With a proper filtration system, water clarifier and chemicals, your swimming pool should be back to normal within a few days.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call regarding any green water or foggy water.
